SUPERIOR COURT SEEKS JUDICIAL LAW CLERKS FOR 2004
The Bar Association has been contacted by the Massachusetts Superior Court regarding applications for judicial law clerk positions for the 2004-2005 term.
The Superior Court employs about forty first-year law clerks to serve its eighty justices. Clerkships begin on September 1, 2004 and require a one-year commitment to the court. Law clerks assist the justices in civil and criminal trials, prepare memoranda and draft decisions on both civil and criminal matters. A clerkship with the Superior Court presents an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the court system.
The Court is looking for highly motivated law students and attorneys with excellent writing, research and communication skills. Applications must be received by the Superior Court Administrative Office, or post-marked, by September 15, 2003.
Virginia Maffei, Manager of Legal Research Services at the Superior Court would be happy to talk to any members with questions about these positions (617/788-8130). For a 3-page position prospectus and application procedure, please contact Fairlie Dalton at 978/686-6900.
DO YOU KNOW THE ADDRESS FOR ANY OF THESE MEMBERS?
The LBA does not have correct addresses for these people:
Michael P. Miller
Jay D. Raxenberg
Kenneth J. Rossetti
If you know the current address for any of these members, please contact Melissa West at mwest@gilbertandrenton.com (978/475-7580). We don't want to lose contact with them.
WEBMASTER NEEDED
The Executive Committee is looking into the possibility of establishing (or is it re-establishing?) an LBA website. If anyone is interested in helping with this project as a webmaster or consultant to construct and host it, or can suggest someone who could do this, please contact Fairlie Dalton at fdalton@nlsma.org (978/686-6900).

Governors of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from time to time issue Executive Orders which have the force of law. UPCOMING EVENTS
The Executive Committee is busy planning events for the fall:
----Our fall dinner where we will honor and thank Matt Caffrey for the terrific job he did as our 2002 president as well as our 50 year members:
George Arvanitis
Hon. Robert C. Hermann
Albert Previte
Jason Rosenberg
Ralph Stein
Bernard Tay
We are excited that we have such a large group of 50-year members to honor and celebrate this year - 1953 must have been a very good year indeed! If there are any other 50 year members that we have not listed, please contact a member of the Executive Committee right away.
---- -Jeff Renton is working on a brown bag lunch to introduce members of the LBA to the new District Court Rules and the One Trial System. It will be held at the Fenton Center and feature a district court judge.
Watch your e-mail and snail-mail for dates and more information about these events.
Thought for the Day
I think the next best thing to solving a problem is finding some humor in it.
- Frank A. Clark
From the mail bag:
From Andy Gradzewicz:
Thank you and the Lawrence Bar Association for the beautiful flowers and kind words. I know that my mother would be most appreciative to know how my colleagues comforted my family upon her passing.
* Matt Caffrey and his family on the birth of their new daughter this summer, Sophia Ella Caffrey. All are doing well.
* Sheila Casey and Kevin Durkin on their July 19th wedding at the Lawrence Boathouse.
AND OUR CONDOLENCES TO :
* Andy Gradzewicz and his family on the death of his mother Genevieve T. Gradzewicz on June 30, 2003. The Bar Association sent flowers in honor of Mrs. Gradzewicz.
SUMMER OUTING
About 30 LBA members and guests gathered on August 1st at the North Andover Country Club for the annual summer outing. Responding to requests for golf, Bob Gilbert organized the first LBA golf tournament. Participants signed up to play 9 or 18 holes. The 2003 winners were: First Place Team - Andy Caffrey, Ed Denn, Bob Gilbert and Jeff Renton ; Individual Quota Winner - Andy Caffrey ; Closest to the Pin - Ed Denn and Long Drive - John O'Leary .
We had hoped to also have a 45's tournament, but we did not have enough card players present to make it work. Instead, people enjoyed the pool and patio area of the Club and everyone gathered poolside for a barbeque dinner at 6:30.
A big thank you to Bob Gilbert and Melissa West of his office for all their work. As in other years, the 2003 summer outing drew fewer than half as many participants as our spring and fall dinners. If you have any ideas about what would attract YOU to come to a summer outing, please contact any member of the Executive Committee.
Items for the next newsletter should be sent to Fairlie A. Dalton, fax no. 978/685-2933, fdalton@nlsma.org
